Meyer, Gladys Irene
Gladys Irene Meyer, 94, of Galesburg, died at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at home.

Gladys was born May 13, 1916 in Piedmont, Okla., to Fred and Rosa Flack Ohnsman. The family moved to Macomb, Ill., where she was raised and graduated with the Class of 1934 from Macomb High School. In 1938, she graduated from Gem City Business College in Quincy, Ill. Following her education, she was employed at a savings and loan company in Macomb and for Fidelity Federal Savings and Loan in Galesburg.

On January 10, 1948, she was united in marriage to Gregory J. Meyer at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Galesburg. Gregory worked for Marquette Cement Company and she was a homemaker and mother of three children, William David, James Allen, and Rose Mary. Gregory died on October 13, 1959. Besides duties as a mother and homemaker, she became employed as a teacher at the Ramsey Kindergarten in Galesburg. Later, she worked at the West and Weber Architectural Company and in the accounting department of St. Mary's Hospital. She retired in January of 1982 and she continued to make her home in Galesburg.

Gladys was a long-time member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Ladies of Mary. She enjoyed traveling, solving crossword puzzles, trying out new recipes and creating scrapbooks for her grandchildren. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and attended her first Cubs game at Wrigley Field with her family on her 90th birthday.

Survivors include her three children, William (and Yvonne) Meyer of Mapleton, Ill., James (and Rose) Meyer of Galesburg, and Rose Mary Schira of West Des Moines, Iowa, five grandchildren, Rachel (and Bill) Astorino of Pittsburgh, Pa., Miriam Meyer of Bozeman, Mont., Aaron Meyer of San Clemente, Calif., Michele Meyer of Chicago, Ill., and Natalie Schira of West Des Moines, and one great grandson, Billy Astorino of Pittsburgh. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two sisters, Helen Fisk and Edna Ohnsman.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Scripture service will be 5 p.m. Friday at the chapel followed by visitation from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
