|I. Raymond Mendrek, 87, of P.O. Box 265, Galesburg, IL. died at 1:15 a.m. Friday, July 8, 2011 in Cottage Hospital.
He was born December 3, 1923 in Pueblo, CO. the son of Michael and Jennie Moskala Mendrek. He married Vernice "Vernie" Pico in Galesburg on October 6, 1956. She survives.
Also surviving is a son, Greg Mendrek of Galesburg; two daughters, Karen Mendrek Bick of Blue Grass, IA and Tracey Mendrek (and Robert Powers) of Northfield, IL.; his mother-in-law, E. Jean Pico of Galesburg and three grandchildren, Amanda and Eric Mendrek and Austin Lea Powers. He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Stan and Hank.
Ray worked as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist at Cottage Hospital for 35 years, retiring in 1989. He graduated from high school in Pueblo, CO. in 1941 and attended the University of Colorado from 1941-1942. He then enlisted in the US Navy for 2 1/2 years working as a medic stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He graduated from Alexian Brothers School of Nursing, Chicago, IL. in 1952 and St. Francis School of Anesthesia, LaCrosse, WI. in 1954. He was an avid golfer and a lifelong member of Soangetaha Country Club. Ray was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
A private family graveside service will be held Monday, July 11, 2011 in East Linwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Costa Catholic Academy. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
