McManus, John Robert
John Robert "Bob" McManus, 99, formerly of 1526 Haynor St., Galesburg, Ill. died at 7:05 a.m. Sunday July 24, 2011 in Seminary Manor, surrounded by his family.

He was born January 28, 1912 in Carthage, Ill., the son of Thomas and Alice Lincoln McManus. He married Elsie Mullen in October of 1949 in Davenport, Iowa. She preceded him in death on April 4, 1990.

He is survived by three granddaughters, Lindy (John) Peterson of Galesburg, Barbara Howard of Lakewood, Colo. and Nancy (Tom) Johnson of Keller, Texas; eight great grandchildren, Ryan and Renee Earl, Tara Earl of Denver, Colo., Lori and (Aaron) Ellison of Bloomington, Ill., Leanne Peterson of Galesburg, Mike and Beth Peterson of Monroe, La., Jason and (Megan) Johnson of Keller, Texas, Stephanie and (George) Whittaker of Texas, and Nikki Johnson of Keller, Texas and four great great grandchildren, Austyn, Jadyn and Braelyn Ellison of Bloomington and Gavin Johnson of Keller, Texas, he loved them all dearly. He is preceded in death by a daughter, Marianna Howard, his son, James Mullen, his parents, one brother and one sister.

He served in the US Army as a corporal for four years during World War II.

Bob was raised in Carthage, where he spent most of his life farming. He moved to Galesburg in 1965 and worked 8 years at the Admiral/Maytag Corporation, retiring in 1974. Bob graduated from Carthage High School in 1930. He was a member of the VFW Post #2257 and a past member of the First Christian Church. Bob was an avid Cardinal and Chicago Bear fan.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2011 in the Moss Ridge Cemetery, Carthage, Ill. with Military Rites by VFW Canteen. Rev. James Ecklund will officiate.

Cremation will be accorded. Visitation will be 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Special Olympics. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
