Carter, George D.
George Delano Carter, age 77 of Abingdon, died at 10:30 pm Sunday, July 7, 2013 at the Care Center of Abingdon.

He was born on April 11, 1936 in Biggers, Arkansas, the son of John William Hobert and Nora Lee (Pennington) Carter. He married Emma Lou "Patsy" Batson on July 13, 1959. They later divorced.

George is survived by two daughters, Patricia Boudreaux of Houma, Louisiana, and Shelly Harrison of Rosemont, Minnesota; one son, John (and Rhonda) Carter of Gentry, Arkansas; 15 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eleanor Landon of Abingdon, and Nellie "Gay" Johnson of Wataga; one brother, William "Pete" (and Phyllis) Carter of Manawa, Wisconsin; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Christine Carter, one grandson, Jonathan Carter, and one brother, Hobert Carter.

He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1955. He served in the Army. He worked at the Burlington Ammunition Plant, the Admiral/Maytag Factory in Galesburg, on the oil rigs in Texas and last worked at the Winn-Dixie Grocery Store in Houma, Louisiana. He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Abingdon and spent many hours reading his Bible. His hobbies included fishing, mushrooming, metal detecting, and working jigsaw puzzles.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, July 12, 2013 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Rev. Jeremiah Barker will officiate. Burial will follow in the Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am Friday at the chapel.
