Johnson, Irene K.
Irene K. (Rylander) Johnson, 97, formerly of Oneida, went to be with her Lord and Savior whom she trusted and served at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at Rosewood Care Center. Her faith in Christ was the cornerstone of her earthly life.

She was born on October 7, 1915, to C.J. Elfving and Lydia Eklund Rylander in rural Oneida, Ill. She married F. Leonard Johnson on March 11, 1958. He preceded her in death on October 20, 1990. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Lydia (1949) and Elfving (1953); four brothers, Verner, Charles, Simer, and infant brother C. Einar; one nephew, Chuck Rylander; and one niece, Lillian Voss.

She was educated at Talbot School, Oneida, in grades one through eight, then at Oneida High School, graduating in 1933. She pursued pediatric nursing, graduating from Augustana Nursery, Chicago. She also graduated from Moody Bible Institute in 1942, and attended Chicago Business College.

Irene was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altona, Ill., where she taught the adult Bible class for many years. She also taught Vacation Bible School and Bible classes in the Oneida public schools' "release time program" in the 1950's. She and her husband, Lennie, were engaged in farming and she enjoyed her role as a wife and partner. Her culinary and hospitality skills resulted in many a delighted guest to their home.
Surviving are her youngest brother, C. Erland Rylander, formerly of Oneida currently at Rosewood Care Center in Galesburg and her only sister, Doris Widbin of Morton. Other survivors include three nieces, Karen (Ron) Moody of Altona, Judy Rylander of Oneida, and Debbie (Shaun) Kennedy of San Antonio; three nephews, John Rylander of Sterling, Larry Rylander of Stanford, Mont., and Mark Widbin of Bolingbrook; along with many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their thanks to staff at Rosewood Care Center and Hospice Compassus, both of Galesburg, for their compassionate care.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altona. Rev. Timothy Anderson will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Oneida Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Altona, or to Moody Bible Institute, 820 N. LaSalle Street, Chicago, IL 60610.
