Calhoun, Shirley J.
Mrs. Shirley Jean Calhoun, 67, of Galesburg, died at 2:24 PM Sunday August 22, 2010 in Seminary Manor Nursing Home.

She was born May 12, 1943, in Wichita Falls, TX to Harold and Dorothy Shelby Thompson. She married Thomas George Calhoun in Galesburg on August 17, 1963 at St. Patricks Catholic Church.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Thomas, two sons Bryan and Shawn Calhoun both of Galesburg and a daughter Julie (John) Sheldon of Gladstone, Ill. Shirley was a loving grandmother to her five grandchildren, Buddy Warden, Faith, Jewel, Mackenzi and Brent Calhoun and two great grandchildren, T.J. and Matthew Warden. Shirleys twin sisters Lee (David) Tressell of Galesburg and Lynn (Ronald) Searl of Greer, SC and her step-sisters, Debbie Stanley of Makanda, Ill and Jean Wolfe of Geneseo, Ill also survive her. She was preceded in death by her parents and her step-mother, Barbara Schlaf Thompson and a step brother Steve Stanley.

Shirley graduated from Corpus Christi High School and received an associates degree in nursing from Carl Sandburg College. She worked at St Marys Hospital and at Henry Hill Correctional Center as a registered nurse.

She was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. She was also a member of TOPS #IL 408 Galesburg serving as an area captain for Knox County for several years.

She fought a courageous battle with multiple myeloma cancer for over 14 years and had participated in various activities promoting cancer awareness.

A Funeral Mass will be 10:00 AM Thursday August 26, 2010 in Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Rev. Msgr. Ernest Pizzamiglio will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM Wednesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, the Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 PM. Cremation to be accorded following services. Burial will be at a later date in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research or St. Vincent de Paul Society. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
