|Richard S. Arnold, 83, rural St. Augustine, Ill., died at 12:53 a.m. Sunday, August 1, 2010 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born December 9, 1926 in Riley Center, Mich. the son of Frank L. and Laura M. Cutcher Arnold. He married Margaret J. VeNard on December 9, 1944. She survives.
Also surviving are sons, Richard L. (and Alice) Arnold of Germantown Hills, Ill. and William E. (and Alice) Arnold of Gilson, Ill., daughters, Elizabeth (and James) Walker of Henderson, Ill., Bonnie J. (and Ron) Arnold and Annette (and James) Woods, both of Abingdon, 15 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Harold, Stewart, and George, sisters, Julia, Arcola, Jenney, and Alma, and a great grandson, Jacob Richard Walker.
Richard worked for Rowe Manufacturing, Butler Manufacturing, John Deere, Gale Products, and then farmed in the Cable and Sherrard areas and worked for Hazel Dell Coal Mine. He then entered the construction field and retired from Operating Engineers Local 649 in Peoria. He loved fishing, camping, watching the Cubs, and family get togethers.
Richard served in the United States Army from March 29, 1945 to June 20, 1946. He was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Army of Occupation Medal-Germany.
Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 3, 2010 in Maquon Cemetery with Mrs. Eleanor Landon officiating. Military rites will be accorded by Abingdon American Legion Post 381.
