|Robert F. Bern, 86, formerly of 955 E. Brooks Street, Galesburg, died 7:40 p.m. Thursday, August 11, 2011 at Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg.
Robert was born February 27, 1925 in Galesburg, Ill., the son of Clarence S. and Violet Olson Bern. He married Doris M. Nelson May 1, 1947 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death December 28, 1999.
He is survived by a son, Bill G. (and Shirley) Bern of Knoxville, Ill.; a brother, Richard (and Margaret) Bern of Galesburg; four grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Robert L. Bern and Frank J. Bern; three brothers and one sister.
Robert enlisted in the US Army from 1943 to 1945. He was assigned to the 6th Engineer Special Brigade during WWII and spent most of his time in the European Theatre. Upon returning from the war he became a member of the Local Union #502 and #676 and worked as a painter and drywall finisher.
Robert was a 50 years member of the Grand Lodge A. F. & A. M. of the Masons.
Graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 15, 2011 at Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Masonic service will be 9:45 a.m. Monday August 15, 2011 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel by A.F. & A.M. Masonic Lodge. Visitation will from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to American Legion V.A. Van Service or Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com
