|Bennie D. Spitzig, age 80 of Cameron, died at 7:40 pm Sunday, July 28, 2013 at Heartland Health Care Center in Galesburg.
He was born on March 5, 1933 in Neelyville, Missouri, the son of Robert Carl and Anna S. (West) Spitzig. He married Dorothy Brock. He married Norma Smith. He married Kathryn "Kay" Smith on October 18, 1968 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on June 20, 2013.
Bennie is survived by three sons, Robert Spitzig of Galesburg, Richard Spitzig of Abingdon and Bill Spitzig of Eldridge, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Marc Spitzig of the Philippines, Eric Spitzig of Abingdon, Casey Spitzig of Galesburg, Michelle Spitzig of Galesburg, Wendi Spitzig of Decatur, Jamie Davidson of Peoria, Christopher Spitzig and Brandi Spitzig, both of Eldridge, Iowa; several great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy (and Jim) Staedt of Montana, Delores (and Keith) Mcgehee of Idaho and Carol Raub of Granite City, Illinois; one niece, Michelle Honchak.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Dennis Michael Honchak.
He lived in Abingdon and Cameron most his life. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. He worked at Maytag in Galesburg for 34 years. His hobbies included working on old cars, attending car shows and gardening.
As he requested, cremation will be accorded. The family will celebrate his life by receiving friends from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday, August 1, 2013 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel with a prayer service and military rites at 6:45 pm.
