|James S. Lawrence, 94, of Alexis died at 6:55 P.M. Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, IL.
He was born August 15, 1915 in Monmouth, IL, the son of Ray and Emma (Slade) Lawrence. He was raised and educated in Alexis, graduating from Alexis High School in 1932.
Jim served with the United State Army Air Force during WWII with the 381st Bomb Group, Ridgewell, Essex, England, rising to the rank of Sergeant.
While in service in England Jim met and later married Margaret L. Dowdall in Crafyford, Kent England on June 20, 1944 and she survives.
Jim worked for Gale Outboard Marine in Galesburg for 30 years as a machinist, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed watching football, especially the Chicago Bears, woodworking and refinishing furniture. He was devoted to his family and the Alexis community.
He was a member of the Alexis United Presbyterian Church and the James Harvey Scott Alexis American Legion Post #189.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Linda Pfeffer of Overland Park, KS and one grandson, Christopher Pfeffer of Overland Park, KS, several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, John Lawrence and Paul Lawrence.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009 at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Alexis. Cremation has been accorded. Burial with Military Honors will be in Alexis Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday morning where his family will be present from 9:00 A.M until the time of the services.
