Cannon, Robert Lee
Dr. Robert Lee Cannon, 91, of 2650 Bridlecreek Lane, Galesburg died at 3:17 AM Sunday August 23, 2009 at his home.

He was born February 23, 1918 in Herrin, IL the son of Clovis Earl and Ruth Van Hoose Cannon. He married Helen Mitchell in Indianapolis, IN. She preceded him in death on October 19, 2001.

Robert is survived by three sons, William (Karin) Cannon of Denver, CO, Richard (Kitty) Cannon of Sarasota, FL and Robert (Tina) Cannon of Gainesville, GA; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

He served in the Coast Guard for 3 1/2 years during World War II in the Pacific Theatre as a Naval Flight LT and surgeon.

He was an ophthalmologist since 1949. He served as Chief of Staff for both Cottage and OSF St. Mary Medical Center. He retired August 31, 1993. Robert graduated from high school in Linton, IN in 1935, Indiana University with a BS in 1939 and received his medical degree in 1942. Dr. Cannon was a member of the Knox County Medical Society and the Illinois State Medical Society. He was a member of the American Medical Association and was named fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1951. He served as a diplomat for the American Board of Ophthalmologists. Dr. Cannon also served as President of the Galesburg School Board District 205, the Rotary Club and Soangetaha Country Club. He was a member of the Knox-Lombard Fifty Year Club and was a member and Sunday school teacher at the First United Methodist Church. Dr. Cannon also volunteered as a Cub Scout Leader.

Memorial service will be 1 PM Saturday, September 19, 2009 in the First United Methodist Church. Cremation has been accorded. Visitation will be noon to 1 PM Saturday at the church.
