Arnold, Margaret Jean
Margaret Jean Arnold, 82, of rural St. Augustine, died at 9:17 pm Friday, September 17, 2010 at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria.

She was born on June 16, 1928 in Macomb, the daughter of Lawrence Y. and Mattie E. (Rhoades) VeNard. She married Richard S. Arnold on December 9, 1944. He preceded her in death on August 1, 2010. She was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, one sister and a great-grandson, Jacob Richard Walker.

She is survived by two sons, Richard L. (and Alice M.) Arnold of Germantown Hills, and William E. (and Alice M.) Arnold of Gilson, three daughters, Elizabeth J. (and James) Walker of Henderson, Bonnie J. (and Ron) Arnold and Annette M. (and James) Woods, both of Abingdon; 15 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, L. Earl (and Jo) VeNard of Mesa, Arizona and George L. (and Mary Ann) VeNard of Beloit, Wisconsin; three sisters, Mary L. Johnson of Galesburg, Patsy J. (and Dale) Kempster of Abingdon and Rebecca (and Sonny) Cooper of Yates City.

Margaret attended a one room schoolhouse in Macomb. She later received her GED diploma from Carl Sandburg College, where she was the class valedictorian and speaker for the ceremony. She was baptized at the Alpha Baptist Church. She had worked at the former Galesburg State Research Hospital as an aide and later worked at the former Maytag factory in Galesburg for six years. She had lived near St. Augustine since 1975. She played the dulcimer and piano. She enjoyed crocheting and sewing, gardening, and baking wedding cakes and birthday cakes. She loved feeding birds and enjoyed watching humming birds. She was an avid Cubs fan.

Graveside service will be 11:00 am Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at the Maquon Cemetery with Mrs. Eleanor Landon officiating. Visitation will be 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.
