|Harold J. Johnson, 87, of 899 Parkview Road, Galesburg, died at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at home.
He was born July 16, 1923 in Galesburg, the son of Emil J. and Ellen E.E. Lindgren Johnson. He married Rosemarie June Sturgeon on August 16, 1950 in Galesburg.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rosemarie, two daughters, Judy (and Steve) Hoffman of Pekin, Ill. and Sylvia (and Michael) Webster of Galesburg, five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, a brother, Clarence (and Lynette) Johnson of Galesburg, and a sister, Rosa Pearson of Galesburg.
Harold was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Galesburg for 31 years. He retired in 1979. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1941 and from Chicago Trade School. He was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, was assistant Sunday school superintendent, was a worship leader, and a member of the Hilltoppers. Harold was also a member of National Association of Letter Carriers, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He served in the United States Army from September 1943 to March 1946 and was stationed in the Pacific/Asia area.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, September 24, 2010 in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Kirk Kendall will officiate. Visitation will be 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens with military rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Memorials may be made to the Galesburg Rescue Mission.
