|Nancy L. (Norquist) Harms, 66, of 435 N. Kellogg St., Galesburg passed away on Saturday, September 25, 2010. Diagnosed in June 2009 with Cholangiocarcinoma cancer, she continued to remain strong but peacefully took her last breath with her family by her side.
Born in LaSalle, Ill. on D-day, June 6, 1944, her parents George and Vivian Anderson Norquist had more to celebrate than the seminal WWII turning point. Growing up in LaSalle, Nancy graduated from LaSalle-Peru High School in 1962 and then went on to marry Ron (Haramincich) Harms in 1965. They first moved to Belvidere, Ill., where her son, Brad was born, and then to Galesburg, Ill. in 1966, where her son, Brent was born.
Nancy earned an accounting degree from Carl Sandburg College and spent 28 years working for Johnson Building Systems in Galesburg before retiring in 1999 to spend time enjoying life and traveling the country with her husband. She was a member of the local chapter of American Business Women's Association (A.B.W.A.), even serving a term as president, and was at one time active in TOPS/KOPS. With her husband, Nancy was an early partner in the Seminary Street Station development group, which was responsible for the commercial revitalization of South Seminary St. in Galesburg. She served as secretary and treasurer for the group.
Nancy had an early passion for antiques and, with her family, enjoyed living in and maintaining the historic Patch-Sisson house in Galesburg, filling it with antiques she had collected over the years. Later in life she gained an interest in lighthouses. As a member of the United States Lighthouse Society, she traveled around the country visiting the many different styles. In addition, she enjoyed spending time with and doting on her grandchildren.
Nancy is survived by her loving husband, Ron; her mother, Vivian of LaSalle; and her two sons, Brad (Hope Cauthon) of Galesburg and Brent (Beth) of Park Ridge, Ill. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Beth (Jerry) Pyszka of LaSalle; brother, Ned (Connie) Norquist of Yorkville, Ill.; three grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Jackson of Park Ridge and Meghan of Galesburg; one step-grandchild, Mackenzie Cauthon of Galesburg and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her father, George Norquist (1999) and a brother, Lyle (Mary Ann) Norquist (2009).
A visitation will be held in Galesburg on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel, then in LaSalle on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hurst Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, September 30, 2010 at Hurst Funeral Home. Burial will be at St. Vincent's Cemetery, LaSalle. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hope Lodge in Iowa City, Iowa, where Nancy spent time with her husband while receiving treatment. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
