Smith, Marjorie J.
Marjorie J. Smith, 102, of Kirkwood, Illinois died at 4:45 P.M. Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011 at Monmouth Nursing Home.

She was born August 22, 1909 in Perry County, near DuQuion, Illinois the daughter of Joseph and Ada Mae (Woodward) Johnson. She was reared and educated in DuQuion and graduated from DuQuion Teachers College.

Marjorie married George H. Smith in Kirkwood, Illinois on June 3, 1938 and he died January 6, 1972

Marjorie was a 3rd grade teacher for 5 years at DuQuion Grade School. She later taught for 3 years at Rule School, Jackson Corner and Downey Schools all in Warren County. She taught for 12 years at Yorkwood Elementary School until her retirement.

She loved to collect antiques, travel, read and gardening.

Marjorie was a member of the Kirkwood United Methodist Church for over 60 years, where she was the primary superintendent and taught Sunday School as well as a 63 year member of the PEO Chapter T , Eastern Star #277 and the Kirkwood Senior Center. She was also a member of the Red Hatters, Retired Teachers, Go Go Girls of Kirkwood as well as a staunch GOP.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews including; Mary Lynn (Ron) Roll of Kirkwood IL, Stephen (Sarah) Hall of Monmouth, IL., Robert (Clare) Hilsenhoff, Donna Hilsenhoff, Lorraine Hilsenhoof all of Manteno IL., and numerous other great and great great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, William Johnson, one sister, Clementine Hilsenhof and 3 nephews.

Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Sat. Sept. 10, 2011 at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth with Rev. Jungil Rhee of the Kirkwood United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Center Grove Cemetery, Kirkwood. Friends may call Friday, Sept. 9, 2011 at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth where her family will be present from 4:00-6:00 P.M. Memorials may be given to the Kirkwood United Methodist Church.
