|Mary Elizabeth Overstreet, 101 of Raritan, IL died in her home September, 7th 2012 surrounded by her family. She was born to Orval and Lena Foltz Pendarvis at Swan Creek, IL on April 14, 1911.
She graduated from Good Hope High School in 1928 and was the last surviving member of her class. She then graduated from Western Illinois University in 1930 with a certificate in teaching. She started her teaching career teaching in local one room school houses and continued teaching in Raritan, Smithshire and Media schools until her retirement in 1972.
Mary married Wayne Esley Overstreet June 12th, 1940 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. She lived in the house they bought for 71 years and where the raised 5 children. She is survived by her 5 children: Darvis (Priscilla) Overstreet of Fayetteville, GA; David (Judy) Overstreet of Good Hope, IL; Anita Overstreet Sparrow of Roseville, IL; Ruby (Rodney) Bowen of Raritan, IL; and Rita (Robert) Hoyle of Lawrence, KS. 5 grandchildren: Brian Myers of Roseville, IL; Danielle Bowen Sours of Monmouth IL; Kimberly (Darren) McDaniel of Macomb, IL; Natalie (Andrew) Lias of San Jose, CA; and Garrett (Ashley) Bowen of Stronghurst, IL. 7 great grandchildren; Ember Bowen, Jesslyn Sours and Skyler Sours all of Monmouth, IL; Lacey, William and Lilly Bowen all of Stronghurst, IL Mackenzie McDaniel of Macomb, IL. 1 great great grandchild Aydenn Bowen Dean of Monmouth, IL. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Wayne and 2 grandsons, David Lee Overstreet and Wayne Robert Myers.
Mary loved being outdoors and doing her gardening, tending to her numerous flowers and mowing her yard which she did up to the age of 98. She believed deeply in saving the Raritan Opera House, she started a grassroots movement in 1951 which ended up saving the Opera House and it is still in use today. Mary also made a "Town" quilt for Raritan with all the citizens names on it. In 1976 she made a Bi-Centennial flag which was carried in the parade and still hangs in the Raritan Museum.
Mary dearly loved her family, home and friends. She was a large influence on many people and she will be greatly missed by all her knew and loved her.
Funeral services will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday September 11th 2012 at her home, 210 S. Trenton in Raritan, IL. Burial will be in Raritan Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday September 10th, 2012 at Mary's home in Raritan from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Memorials may be made to the Henderson county Humane Society or the Henderson county Museum.
