|Robert G. "Jerry" Rehling, age 73, of 791 Illinois Route 41, Abingdon, died at 3:40 am Monday, September 17, 2012 at home.
He was born on June 7, 1939 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Frederick and Dorothea (Glendening) Rehling, who preceded him in death. He married Bonnie Waddill on Sept. 30, 1961 in Stronghurst. She preceded him in death on August 31, 2005.
Jerry is survived by two sons, Barry (DeAnne) Rehling and Beau Rehling, one daughter, Kelly (Steve) Batson, two grandchildren, Caleb Batson and Karly Batson and one step-grandchild, Tony (Michelle) Batson, all of Abingdon. He also has one sister, Janet (Chris) Richardson of Fort Mill, South Carolina.
He graduated from Stronghurst High School in 1957 and attended Blackhawk College in Burlington. After his marriage, he lived in a cabin in Shokokon, he later lived in Stronghurst and in 1964 he moved to the Abingdon area to make his home. He farmed, he managed the Wareco gas station on East Main Street in Galesburg for the Ware Oil Company and he drove a semi truck for VSM Trucking in Abingdon and retired from there in November of 1994.
He was a past member of the National Tractor Pullers Association and the Illinois Tractor Pullers Association, a past member of the Abingdon Athletic Booster Club, a past member of the Abingdon Fall Festival Association where he chaired the first Demolition Derby held there. His hobbies included being a sports fan of the Bears, Cubs and Fighting Illini. He also enjoyed driving his truck around a three county area helping local farmers.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, September 20, 2012 at the Abingdon Christian Church. Rev. Darryl McDaniel will officiate. Burial will be in Carman Cemetery in Carman at 1:30 pm Thursday. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 pm Wednesday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.
