|John J. Oakman, 82, of Galesburg, Ill. died at 12:05 p.m. Saturday, September 1, 2012 at his home.
He was born September 3, 1929 in Waterloo, Iowa to Ernest M. and Mildred Hanss Oakman. He married Mary Jane Donaldson in Rock Island, Ill. in 1955. She preceded him in death in 1967. He later married Carolyn Ruth Thompson-Wilkins June 10, 1972 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death June 18, 1997.
Surviving is a son, Mark E. (and Deborah) Oakman of Galesburg; a step son, Charles H. Wilkins of Belding, Mich.; a daughter, Bonnie (and Paul) Yard of Galesburg; a step daughter, Bonnie (and David) Kniss of Galesburg, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
John graduated from Galesburg High School in 1948. He then served in the United States Army for two years and was stationed in Germany. He worked for A&P Grocery Store in Galesburg for eight years and then Illinois Power Company as a drafting engineer for 26 years. He retired in 1974. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Galesburg.
Cremation will be accorded with a memorial service 2 p.m. Saturday, September 8, 2012 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Daniel Siems will officiate. Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. at the chapel. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church or American Cancer Society. Online condolence may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
