Shaver, James A.
James A. Shaver, 85, 531 Irwin St., Galesburg, died at 7:45 AM Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at home.

He was born March 3, 1924 in North Henderson, IL, the son of Harold and Melvina Edgar Shaver. He married Mary E. Teval on June 26, 1948 in Galesburg.

He is survived by his wife, Mary of Galesburg, 2 sons, John R. Shaver of Columbus, OH and Barry J. (and Virginia) Shaver of Peoria, IL, a daughter, Mary C. (and Tim) Courtney of Rio, IL, 7 grandchildren, Veronica, Jared, Brandon, Kyle, Aaron, Alex, and Abram, 7 great grandchildren, Zach, K.K., Jessica, Natalie, Rozalynn, Gabby, and Will, a brother, Donald L. Shaver of Salinas, CA, and a sister, Paula K. Johnson of Honolulu, HI. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Alan and Robert and a sister, Joan.

He attended Monmouth College from 1941 to 1942, when he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He served for 3 years during World War II, where he flew P-47 Thunderbolts with the 12th Air Force in the Mediterranean Theatre. He attained the rank of First Lieutenant.

He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked at Newcomer Hybrid Corn Company from 1950 to 1952. He was a quality control engineer at the former Gale Products Division of Outboard Marine Corporation for 30 years. He retired in April of 1983.

Cremation will be accorded. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 PM Friday, October 9, 2009 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Graveside services will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery with Rev. Msgr. Ernest Pizzamiglio officiating. Military Rites will be accorded by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285.
