|Kathleen R. "Kate" Rawlings, 85 of 105 S. Harshbarger St., Abingdon, died at 7:40 am Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at the Care Center of Abingdon.
She was born on February 28, 1925 in Effingham, Ill. to John W. and Florence L. (Shadwell) Pippin. She married Robert L. Rawlings on March 22, 1943 in Effingham. He preceded her in death on May 25, 1995. She was also preceded in death by her parents, twin infant sons Roy and Ray and a son Lester Rawlings, two sisters and four brothers.
Kate is survived by her children, Carolyn (and Donnie) DeJaynes of Abingdon and Robert L. "Butch" (and Connie) Rawlings, Jr. of rural Abingdon; nine grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; four brothers, John (and June) Gerhardt of Columbus, Ohio, Wallace (and Sharon) Gerhardt, Kenny (and Mary) Gerhardt and Jim Pippin all of Effingham; two sisters, Alice Welton and Mary Muntean both of Effingham.
She grew up in Effingham, where she attended school. She moved to Galesburg with her husband and family in 1946 and then to Abingdon in 1957. She was a member of the Roseville Christian Church. She and her husband managed the former Abbe Theatre, the Abingdon Roller Rink, the Abingdon Hotel and Restaurant and later owned and operated the K & L Bait Shop. Her hobbies included collecting dolls, crocheting and tormenting her grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, October 9, 2010 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Mrs. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Burial will follow in the Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday evening from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the chapel.
