Bailey, Herman L.
Herman L. Bailey, 86, formerly of 1986 Baird Ave., Galesburg, died at 8:35 p.m. Friday, October 14, 2011 in Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville.

He was born July 25, 1925 in Peoria, Ill., the son of Harry C. and Edna Buracker Bailey. He married Dorothy I. Courson on January 23, 1948 in Peoria.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a daughter, Bonnie (and Donald) Ruhl of Galva; two sons, Michael (and Billie) Bailey of Victoria and Dennis (and Denise) Bailey of Lake Bracken; two stepsons, Charles (and Bonnie) Fisher of Florida and Jess (and Joetta) Fisher of Galesburg; and several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step father, Orville Voland; two brothers; and three grandsons.
Herman was a mechanic for Kelly Oil Company in Altona for 15 years and later worked in maintenance at St. Mary Medical Center for 11 years before retiring. He was raised and educated in Peoria, attending Manuel High School. He had lived in Galesburg since 1954.

Herman served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. He was stationed in England and France and was a POW for a year. He was awarded numerous medals including the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He was a member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2011 in East Linwood Cemetery. Rev. Phyllis Sterr will officiate and military rites will be provided by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Visitation will be 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to Knox County Humane Society. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
