|John R. Baker, 73, of 3028 Whitehaven Circle, Galesburg, IL, died 3:36 p.m. Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Seminary Manor, Galesburg.
He was born March 16, 1938 in Kansas City, Mo. to Thomas and Evelyn Elizabeth Weiden Baker. He married Sharon Kay Hurley. She preceded him in death. He later married Barbara Toelle in 1976 in Freeport, Ill. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Steven (and Kim) Baker of O'Fallon, Mo. and Bradley Baker of Galesburg; and two grandsons, Zach and Alex Baker of O'Fallon, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents.
John worked in the banking business for several years. He later worked in management at Alliant Energy in Madison, Wis. and retired in April of 2000. After retirement he worked part time as an instructor at Carl Sandburg College, Galesburg. He graduated from Wyandotte High School, Kansas City, Kan. in 1956 and the University of Missouri, Kansas City in 1968. He served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962 and was stationed in West Germany. John was a volunteer at the Galesburg Welcome Center. He enjoyed wood working and watching sports, including the St. Louis Cardinals, Green Bay Packers and the Wisconsin Badgers.
Memorial service will be 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. James Clement will officiate. Visitation will be 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. Private graveside service will be at East Linwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society or Prairieland Animal Welfare Center, Galesburg.
