Hughs, Josephine Agnes
Josephine Agnes Hughs, age 92, of Gilson, Illinois, formerly of Dahinda, Illinois, died on Monday, November 9, 2009 at 6:23 P.M. at Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville, Illinois.

She was born on March 24, 1917 in Knoxville, Illinois, the daughter of Samuel Spalding and Mary Boone Edelen.

She married Merrill Richard "Bill" Hughs on March 8, 1941 in Burlington, Iowa.

He preceded her in death on March 1, 1994.

Surviving are sons: Russell Max (Pat) Hughs of Galesburg, Illinois; Henry Ray "Tim" (Sherry) Hughs of Gilson, Illinois; Pat Wyman (Anita) Hughs of Gilson, Illinois; Merrill Don (Jan) Hughs of Knoxville, Illinois; Eight Grandchildren and Fifteen Great Grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her parents; husband and one sister: Mary Faye Sparks.

She was reared and educated in Higginsville, Missouri graduating from Higginsville High School in 1936.

She was a homemaker; worked at the former St, Martha's Nursing Home in Knoxville; and worked for Dr. Reuben A. Moffett and later for Marie Moffett for 17 years.

She and her husband operated the general store in Dahinda, Illinois for 10 years from 1974 to 1984; and owned and trained harness racing horses for 20 years and was a member of the U.S.T.A. Trotting Association.

She was of the Catholic faith.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 3:00 P.M. at the Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois with Visitation beginning at 2:00 P.M. Rev. Marty Briney officiating.

Burial in Gilson Cemetery in Gilson, Illinois.

Memorials may be made to the Williamsfield Library and Knox County Nursing Home.
