|Ven. Bro. Francis C. McElroy, OSB, Oblate, 90, of 820 E. Fifth St., Galesburg, IL, died at 1:00 AM Sunday, November 15, 2009 at the Holy Rosary Abbey.
He was born December 12, 1918 in New York City, the son of James Peter and Mary Catherine Mayers McElroy.
He is survived by his sister, Kathleen McElroy McKeegan and nieces and nephews, including, Kevin F. McElroy of Mahwah, NJ. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, James and Vincent, and a sister, Margaret "Maggie" McElroy Young.
Francis was a civil engineer for Hardesty and Waddell Engineers in New York for 35 years. He retired in 1980. He graduated from Our Lady of Sorrows in 1933, LaSalle Academy High School in 1937, and from New York University in 1943. He served with the Army Combat Engineers during World War II, where he was stationed in Italy, Southern France, and Sicily. He saw combat during the invasions of southern France and Anzio and was awarded a Purple Heart.
Francis was of the Roman Catholic faith and was a member of the Holy Rosary Abbey in Galesburg. He was a Resident Oblate Brother in the Order of St. Benedict, Holy Rosary Abbey. He was a Knight of the Altar and was an altar server all of his life until recently.
Visitation and Rosary will be 7:00 PM Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at Holy Rosary Abbey. Office of the Dead will be at 7:00 AM Wednesday, November 18, 2009 and will be followed by the Requiem Mass will be 11:00 AM Wednesday at Holy Rosary Abbey with Most Rev. & Lord Abbot Ryan St. Anne, OSB officiating. Entombment will be in Hope Abbey Mausoleum in Hope Cemetery, Galesburg.
