Vogel, Betty L.
Betty L. Vogel, 75, of 2676 Springer Road, Galesburg, died at 5:20 p.m. Thursday October 28, 2010 in OSF St. Frances Medical Center, Peoria.

She was born May 18, 1935 in Pella, Iowa the daughter of Lester and Mabel Van Der Werff Boat. She married George C. Vogel in Des Moines, Iowa on March 29, 1975. He preceded her in death on May 13, 2005.

She is survived by a step son, Kenneth (Mary) Vogel of Rancho Mirage, Calif., a step daughter, Darlene (Edward) Van Meir of Elmhurst, a brother, Dale (Judy) Boat of West Des Moines, Iowa, a foster sister, Marilyn (Jim) Heathcote of West Des Moines, Iowa, eight step grandchildren, 15 step great grandchildren, her aunt, Ruby Schrader of Monroe, Iowa, three nephews, two nieces and several great nephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister and two step grandchildren.

Betty was an elementary school teacher for District #205 for 23 years, retiring in 1994. She graduated from East High School in Des Moines, Iowa in 1953 and the University of Northern Iowa in 1971. She has lived in Galesburg since 1971. Betty was a tutor for the Literacy Volunteers and also volunteered for CASA. She was a member of the Galesburg Study Club and the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of the Covenant Church in Galesburg. She taught Sunday school, served on several boards within the church and also served as the church secretary for 10 years.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday November 1, 2010 at the Covenant Church. Rev. Paula Ziems, her niece, and Rev. Thomas Ek will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday October 31, 2010 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial will be in Portergrove Cemetery, near Pella, Iowa at 12 noon Tuesday November 2, 2010.
