Abernethy, Vivian
Vivian Abernethy, 89, of Galesburg, passed from this earth and was welcomed to the Gates of Heaven by her Heavenly Father, at 4:20 P.M. November 6, 2011. She was born in Jefferson County, Iowa, on June 25, 1922, to Louis and Ethel McWilliams Shellman of Lockridge, Iowa.

She graduated from Fairfield High School with the class of 1940. She worked at Glove and Mitton Factory in Fairfield, Bluebell in Abingdon, Illinois, Gross Company in Galesburg, and was a patient assistant for 20 years at Galesburg Cottage Hospital. She married Ted Abernethy December 10, 1942, at the Baptist Church parsonage in Lockridge, Iowa. Ted was in the Army in WW2, left December 12, 1942, for overseas, and was gone 39 months in the European theater. She was a homemaker and enjoyed 50 years of gardening and canning, sewing, decorating her home, and was a wonderful cook. She was known as the best pie baker in town, always making special pies for family, friends, and loved ones. She was a loving and caring mother, and always wanting to help everyone she could. She was a devoted wife, taking care of her husband at home for seven years after he suffered a stroke, until his death in 2003.

Surviving are two children, Connie L Abernethy, Rodney A (and Carol) Abernethy, both of Galesburg, one sister, Elaine Baese, Lockridge, Iowa, four nieces and two nephews, two cats, Velvet and Beaner. She was a member of First Christian Church, Galesburg, and in later years was not able to attend church regularly, but watched Hour of Power with Robert Schuller. She was a past member of OAKS Senior Center's Swinging Acorns Band, enjoying playing music with her husband and performing at nursing homes.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant granddaughter, and husband Ted. She lived a good, long, wonderful life, never having lengthy sickness or illness, until the last several months of her life. All who knew her were touched by her acts of loving kindness and concern. She will be greatly missed by all.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes & Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois. Rev. Greg and Martha Jean Fitch Officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes & Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois. Burial will be at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Galesburg, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the Robert Schuller Ministries.
