|Leo Gale Munson, age 90 of Peoria, formerly of Abingdon and Clearwater, Florida, died at 1:45 am Saturday, November 26, 2011 at the Liberty Village Manor Court in Peoria.
He was born on October 27, 1921 in Galesburg, the son of Leo G. and Sue (Lapham) Munson. He married Gale "Tig" Schugmann on October 12, 1945 in Abingdon.
Leo is survived by his loving wife of sixty-six years, Gale "Tig"; one daughter, Ellen (and Joe) Groesch of Chillicothe; two granddaughters, Dr. Teresa (and Dan Gilbert) Groesch of Baltimore, Maryland and Janet (and Scott) Sullivan of Yorkville and three great-grandchildren.
He was a 1943 graduate of Knox College in Galesburg. He was an Army veteran of WW II and was a Purple Heart recipient. He was a member of the American Legion Brandon Post #7 in Clearwater, Florida.
He had lived in Abingdon for 40 years and worked at and later managed the Fidelity Federal Savings & Loan for 35 years, retiring in October of 1983. He and "Tig" retired to Clearwater, Florida, where they resided for 25 years before they moved to Peoria in 2006. While living in Abingdon, he had served as President of the Abingdon Unit District #217 School Board for several years and he had also served as President of the Knox County Housing Authority.
He was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Largo, Florida. His hobbies included playing golf, bridge and doing crossword puzzles.
Cremation will be accorded. Memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, December 2, 2011 at Weaver Ridge Country Club in Peoria. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
