|Ernest S. Wedell, Jr., 82, of East Galesburg, Ill., died at 7:50 a.m. Monday, November 12, 2012 in Cottage Hospital.
He was born August 4, 1930 in Galesburg, Ill., the son of Ernest S. and Verna Moser Wedell Sr. He married Faye Malcolm on March 25, 1956 in Galesburg, Ill. She survives.
Also surviving is his son, Robert S. (Patricia) Wedell of Oak Run, Dahinda, Ill.; three daughters, Janice (James Herbsleb) Wedell of Pittsburgh, Pa., Jeanette (Douglas) Hammel of Indianapolis, Ind., and Judith (Charles) Young of Champaign, Ill.; four grandchildren, Wayne (Amber) Hammel, Julia (Michael) O'Shea, Audrey (Nicholas) McGee and Mitchell (Cyndi) Wedell and four great grandchildren, Brynlee, Riley, Colton and Connor. He is preceded in death by his parents.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was wounded in the Battle of "Pork Chop Hill" for which he received The Purple Heart.
Ernest worked for Admiral/Maytag Corporation for 20 years. He also farmed his entire life, retiring from farming in 1982. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1947 and attended the University of Illinois Extension. He was a member of the El Bon Shrine Club, the Galesburg Masonic Lodge, V.F.W. #2257, the Moline Consistory, Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285 and the Disabled American Veterans. He served as past vice president of the Knox County Farm Bureau. Ernest was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, November 15, 2012 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. David Parker will officiate. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel with Masonic services at 6 p.m. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery with Military Rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285.
