|Mrs. Gene B. Mills, 99, of Savoy, Illinois, formerly of Knoxville and Galesburg, passed away at 5:00 am, Friday, November 22, 2013 at Carle Foundation Hospital.
She was born February 19, 1914 in Moline, Illinois, the daughter of William Warren and Eileen (Miller) Balsley. She married Culver C. "Coke" Mills on August 28, 1937 in Galesburg, Illinois. They were married 59 years when he preceded her in death on Monday, April 14, 1997 at Eldorado Hospital in Tucson, Arizona.
Surviving are two children, Douglas Culver "Doug" (Cisty) Mills, formerly of Champaign, IL, currently of Peoria, IL and Virginia Ann "Ginger" (Mike) Mills Baxter, formerly of Knoxville, IL, currently of Fort Myers Beach, FL; four grandsons, David Douglas Mills, Robert Morrison Mills, Michael Culver Baxter, and Christopher Robert Baxter, and three great grandchildren, Madison Mills, Ashley Mills, and Alistair Baxter. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert William Mills on May 9, 1989 and a sister, Virginia Balsley Bouseman in 1996.
Growing up in Winchester, Illinois, Gene and her family moved to Galesburg in 1929, where she attended high school and college, graduating from Knox College in 1935. She was a member of Phi Mu Sorority.
She began her teaching career in 1935 in Aledo, IL, and taught in Knox County schools for 25 years, teaching physical education her last 13 years at Lombard Junior High School in Galesburg. She retired in 1974. While living in Galesburg, Gene was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, served on the YMCA board, and was a Silas Willard PTO president. Her hobbies included golf, bridge, bowling, and walking.
Cremation will be accorded. A memorial service will be held Monday, December 2, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Windsor of Savoy. Burial will be at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery in Galesburg.
