|Arthur Eugene McElhaney 69, of Bonita Springs, FL, formerly of Knoxville, IL, passed away on Monday November 18, 2013.
Art was born to the late Durbin and Lettie (nee Morlan) McElhaney, February 10, 1944 in Hoopeston, IL. He married Cathy (nee O'Malley) McElhaney May 8, 1964. They lived in Knoxville, IL until 1987, and moved to Rock Island, IL before moving to Bonita Springs, FL in 2009.
Art devoted his entire career to the betterment of those with special needs and challenges. He was a teacher and administrator for Galesburg Mental Health Center. He also was an adjunct professor at Knox College in Galesburg, IL. He then served as the Executive Director for ARC, Rock Island, IL for 20 years before his retirement.
Art was an avid fisherman, and also enjoyed golf, tennis, and pickleball: but most of all, loved and cared for all of his family.
Art is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Cathy; his beloved daughters, Erin Ryan of Woodstock, IL and Michele (Doug) Robinson of St. Charles, IL; seven cherished grandchildren, Caitlin, Blaize, Patrick, Megan, Katie, Zach and Hailey; and great grandson, Zachary. He was preceded in death by his son, Ryan, in 1990.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, November 30, 2013 from 11:30 A.M. - 2:30 PM at the Hurd-Hendricks Fellowship Center in Knoxville, Illinois. A private graveside memorial service at the Knoxville Cemetery will be on Saturday, November 30, 2013.
