|Elmer Dickerson, 78, of Galesburg, IL, died at 10:10 a.m. Monday, November 29, 2010 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
He was born on July 4, 1932 in Saltelo, Ark. to Dallas and Ada Mitchell Dickerson. He married Mattie Talley on September 3, 1956 in Conway, Ark. She survives.
Also surviving are six daughters, Katherine Robinson of St. Louis, Mo., Cynthia (and John II) Kelley of Water Valley, Miss., Barbara (and Douglas) King, Susan (and Walter) Gordon, Tobithia Dickerson and Valeria (and Larry) Trent, all of Galesburg; a sister, Ollie Harrison of Peoria, Ill.; 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother, Elbert Dickerson and two brothers, Thamous Dickerson and Earl Dickerson; and a sister, Oddessa Carter.
Elmer owned and operated Elmer's Wrecker Service for over 20 years where he built all of his own tow trucks.
He also worked as a mechanic at the Ford Motors garage, and then Dohrn Transfer. He retired from Cedar Trucking Company as a driver.
He was a member of the Teamsters Union and a former president of the Galesburg Travelers Motorcycle Club. He enjoyed working on cars, trucks and lawn mowers as well as riding his motorcycle.
He served in the Army during the Korean War.
Funeral services will be 12 noon on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at the Calvary Assembly of God, 1150 West Carl Sandburg Drive, with Bishop Howard Hendrix officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to noon at the Church. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285.
