|Joe Franklin Burgess, Sr. age 74, of Knoxville, Illinois died on Friday, December 2, 2011 at 11:18 A.M. at the Knox County Nursing Home.
He was born in Knoxville, Illinois on August 13, 1937 the son of Franklin and Gertrude (Chapman) Burgess. He attended Knoxville schools, graduating from the Knoxville High School with the class of 1955. He married Rosalie Godsil on May 20, 1961. She survives of Knoxville, Illinois.
They have one son, Joe Franklin (Kathy) Burgess, Jr. of Genoa, Illinois. There are three grandchildren, Joe Franklin (Corey) Burgess III of Bloomington, Illinois, Michael Burgess and Amie Burgess of Genoa, Illinois. Joe is also survived by many nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Joe was a Military Policeman in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962. He was a former member of the Knoxville Community Fire Department and, at one time served as City Fire Chief. Joe was a 2nd Ward Alderman from 1980 through 1983, and then was a member of the Plan Committee from 1997 through 2008, when he was appointed Building and Zoning Administrator for the City of Knoxville. He was a board member of the Knox County Historic Sites and was treasurer for over 30 years. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Knoxville, Illinois and the Harry Philbald American Legion Post #749 of Knoxville, Illinois. He helped his wife compile the historic photo collection in the Knoxville Public Library.
Joe worked with this father and Russell Steele forming Burgess Construction Company. In later years, Joe operated Burgess Wood Specialists until his retirement.
Joe enjoyed visiting with his friends and family, gardening and collecting vintage articles. He liked to work on small motors and was a master craftsman. His faithful dog and cat were always by his side.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes & Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois. Revs. Phyllis Sterr and Milton Marquith officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 5, 2011 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Burial will be in the Knoxville Cemetery, Knoxville, Illinois with Military Rites. Fellowship will follow the Graveside service at the First United Presbyterian Church in Knoxville, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the Knox County Historic Sites or the Jon Squire Christmas Fund through the East Galesburg Community Chapel.
