|Silver Streaks Try Again for First Conference Win
|Galesburg High School's girls basketball team hopes Thursday night is the night the skid ends.
The Silver Streaks host Quincy in a Western Big Six game at John Thiel Gymnasium. Galesburg has been outstanding outside of conference, posting a 12-3 record. Conference games have been another matter entirely as Galesburg is 0-5 in those games. One of the losses was a 73-67 decision in Quincy November 24th. The Blue Devils are having a solid season with a 10-5 overall record, including a 2-2 mark in Big Six play. Quincy was 8-19 last season and finished 2-8 in conference play.
Galesburg and Quincy have each won three of their last four games. GHS is coming off an 87-58 victory at Queen of Peace last Saturday while the Blue Devils lost 56-55 at Glenwood on December 19th. Quincy's game a week ago at United Township was postponed until Saturday because of the weather, so the Streaks are hoping the Blue Devils are rusty.
Quincy's other conference win was at home against Rock Island last month, 52-33. The two losses were to Moline and Alleman, the top two teams in the league.
Freshman Jordan Fletcher and sophomore Darion Stephens scored 15 points each to lead Quincy past Galesburg in the teams' previous meeting. Jessica Howard, the Streaks' leading scorer, connected on six 3-point shots for a game-high 18 points in the loss. Shelby Pacheco added 11 and Mickey Rodriguez had 10.
Galesburg made 14 3-point baskets in the win against Queen of Peace. Rodriguez led the way with 15 points. Megan Young and Pacheco each had 11 and Maddy Boyer added 10.
Howard is fourth in the Western Big Six in scoring (12.1) and leads the league with 62 three-point baskets. Rodriguez is sixth in scoring (10) and second behind Howard with 58 three-pointers. Pacheco (9.2) is eighth in the league and Sara Baker (7.6) is 14th.
Pregame coverage of the Galesburg/Quincy game begins at 6:40 p-m on WGIL AM 1400. The Galesburg High School sophomore team battles the Quincy sophs at 5:30.
