|Silver Streaks Hoping to Pay Rocky Back
|High School Girls Basketball
Galesburg High School gets another crack at Rock Island, which picked up its only Western Big Six victory against the Silver Streaks last month.
Galesburg (13-9, 1-5) has won seven of its last 10 games, including an 81-56 victory against Quincy January 14th at John Thiel Gym, to avenge an earlier loss to the Blue Devils heading into Thursday night's game at home against the Rocks.
Rock Island (8-12, 1-6) pounded Galesburg 77-58 in the Quad Cities December 3rd. The Rocks have not played well of late though, compiling a 3-7 record over the last 10 games.
The Silver Streaks shot poorly against Rock Island in the previous meeting and gave up numerous layups. The Rocks were led by Whitney Hoover's 19 points. Hoover averages 6.7 points per game. LaShonica Johnson also had a big game with 17 points. She averages just 3.4 points per game. Two other Rock Island players scored in double figures: Rayven Morrow (11, 6.5 ppg) and Sarita Goldsmith (10, team-leading 8.2 ppg).
Galesburg, which can match last season's win total with a victory Thursday night against Rock Island, had two players score in double figures in the first meeting between the teams - Sara Baker and Mickey Rodriguez (9.6 ppg) with 11 points each. Leading scorer Jessica Howard (12.3 ppg) struggled and finished with 5 points in the game. Shelby Pacheco, the Streaks' third leading scorer behind Rodriguez at 9 points per game, finished the night with 7.
Both teams are coming off losses. Galesburg's two-game winning streak was snapped at Normal West (76-60) while Rock Island has dropped two in a row (1/12 vs. Alleman 51-41, 1/14 vs. United Township 57-33).
