|Monmouth & Knox Colleges to Battle Each Other, Cancer This Weekend
|It will be its usual festive time with a twist when Knox College's men's and women's basketball teams meet longtime rival Monmouth College this weekend for Basketball Homecoming.
Between the women's and men's games on Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium, Knox College will honor the 1974-1975 Midwest Conference Championship men's basketball team and its coach Harley Knosher.
During the men's game, despite the heated rivalry, Priaire Fire coach Rob Purlee, his staff and Monmouth coach Mark Vershaw and his Fighting Scots basketball staff will be making an interesting fashion statement: wearing sneakers with their usual game attire to show support for the American Cancer Society's work to save lives from cancer. Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers awareness weekend is a collaborative initiative of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the American Cancer Society. Coaches across the country will be showing their support.
Coach Purlee and Coach Vershaw's collaborative effort to fight cancer will be the second time that the Knox-Monmouth rivalry has been utilized to reach a common goal. The Knox and Monmouth Student Athlete Advisory Committees teamed up Friday morning to host Miles for Myles to raise awareness and funds to battle cancer. Miles for Myles is in honor of former NCAA President Dr. Myles Brand.
