|Man Gets 2 Years for Stabbing Former NIU Player
|SYCAMORE, Ill. (AP) -- A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to two years in prison for stabbing former Northern Illinois University linebacker Devon Butler.
Freddie Sparks-Ward pleaded guilty to aggravated battery with use of a deadly weapon and was sentenced Thursday. The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle reports that other charges against Sparks-Ward were dropped as part of the guilty plea.
According to court documents, Sparks-Ward was thrown out of a party in July after getting into a dispute with Butler. Authorities say he later returned and stabbed Butler with a knife before fleeing.
Butler was only slightly hurt and returned to practice the next day. The Huskies later released him for failing to meet team conduct standards.
Butler also had been shot in April 2011 while in an off-campus apartment visiting friends.
