IHSA Looking Into Possible Extra Game by Galesburg High School Boys Basketball Team
The Illinois High School Association is working with Galesburg High School to determine whether a game the Silver Streaks boys basketball team played in December was both a tournament game and a conference game or not.

Officials at Rock Island High School recently brought the matter to the IHSA's attention, contending the Galesburg game at United Township on December 18th was a conference tilt. Galesburg officials say it was both a conference game and a tiebreaker as part of the Galesburg M.L. King Boys Basketball Tournament. The IHSA permits teams to play 16 regular season games and three tournaments. Rock Island believes Galesburg will play 17 games after Tuesday night's scheduled contest at Thiel Gym against Peoria Notre Dame.

All but two games in the tournament were played between January 16th and January 18th. The exceptions were Galesburg High School's game at U-T and a game on December 2nd between Maine South and Lakes played at Lakes (won by Maine South 58-46).

Galesburg finished the tournament with a 4-0 record while U-T went 3-1. GHS Athletic Director Ralph Henning says the schedule falls within the rules.

"We are working with the IHSA at this time," Henning said. "We believe everything we did was up to snuff. We were very transparent about the tournament and all the other MLK (tournament) teams played the 'fifth' game."

"What we did was legal," Henning said. "Tournaments may be five games and you may count conference games and is done by other tournaments, including our girls, but our contract language is likely the issue."

Henning said the tournament listed a guaranteed minimum of four games. "Other tournaments may have a two or three game guarantee, but it is possible to play more than that. Most of our Thanksgiving teams played the fifth game. The fifth game 'counts' as a tie-breaker."

Peoria Notre Dame is reportedly aware of the situation and of the possibility that Galesburg might have to drop that game. The Streaks have three regular season games left to play going into Friday night: at Rock Island Alleman, at home against Moline next Friday night and the Notre Dame game on Tuesday.

The PND game would be the one removed if the IHSA rules Galesburg violated the association's scheduling guidelines. Henning expects to hear from the IHSA by Monday.
