| Car Rental Companies Oppose Cubs Stadium Change |
PHOENIX (AP) -- Arizona lawmakers are searching for a way to build a new spring-training stadium for the Chicago Cubs without dipping into depleted state coffers or raising taxes.
The Legislature is looking at adding a $1 surcharge to auto rentals in the Phoenix area, but that has frequent travelers and car-rental companies crying foul.
San Diego-based business traveler Jim Skomski says there are already enough taxes. And American Car Rental Association Bob Barton says taxing rental-car customers from out of state is taxation without representation.
But supporters of the fee say it's minimal, and that $1 per rental is hardly a burden on rental-car bills that often reach into the hundreds of dollars. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
