| Streaks to Honor Late Coach Gray; Clash with WB6 Leader Rock Island |
There will be a lot of the color pink in Thiel Gymnasium Friday when Galesburg plays Western Big Six rival and state-ranked Rock Island. The Silver Streaks are honoring their late assistant coach Jason Gray, and as part of the commemoration, the basketball program has been selling Galesburg Basketball "Coach Gray Night Pink Out" pink t-shirts. Proceeds from the t-shirt sales will be donated to an education fund for Gray's 1-year old son Zeke. Galesburg players will be wearing special uniforms with pink in them as part of the commemoration as well. On the court, Galesburg plays the Western Big Six leading Rocks, who come in ranked 7th in the state in Class 3A. Rocky beat Galesburg in the teams' previous meeting in December 48-45. The Silver Streaks got off to a slow start and shot just 2-of-12 from the free-throw line in that game. The Streaks have won nine of their last 10 games, including a 49-34 victory against Geneseo last Saturday night at Thiel Gym that snapped a four-game slide against the Maple Leafs. Victor Davis led the way with 17 points. He's among the Western Big Six's top scorers at 18 points per game. Galesburg lost at Quincy a week ago in their last conference game, snapping a two-game league winning streak. Rock Island got by United Township (43-40) last Friday then lost to Peoria Central (64-58) the next day in the Quad Cities/Peoria Shootout. The Rocks feature all-state junior guard Chasson Randle, who is averaging about 19 points per game. Rock Island comes in with an overall record of 16-5 and a 6-1 mark in conference play. Galesburg is 16-8 and 2-4 in the Big Six. Rocky has won seven of the last 10 meetings with Galesburg, including the last two. The Rocks lead the all-time series 96-84. Pregame coverage for Friday night's showdown begins at 7:06 pm on AM 1400 WGIL and online at www.wgil.com.
