|FIRST ON WGIL: Assistant Named New Abingdon High School Football Coach
|FIRST REPORTED 11:50 a.m. 2/11/10 Abingdon High School has stayed within the football program in hiring a new leader.
The District 217 School Board with a 6-0 vote Wednesday night named Rick Quinn head coach of the Commandos. Quinn previously served as an assistant under Dennis Larson. Larson resigned from the position last year after 15 seasons.
Larson compiled a 66-78 record for Abingdon and led the team to seven straight postseason appearances between 1996-97 and 2002-03. The Commandos football team has struggled in recent years. Abingdon hasn't had a winning season since the 2001-02 campaign, when that team finished with an 8-3 record. The Commandos made the playoffs the following year and finished 5-5.
Last season's team finished with a 3-6 record. Larson never publicly said why he stepped down. The Abingdon School Board accepted his resignation at the same time it accepted Toby Whiteman's as athletic director. Whiteman also quit as assistant football coach.
