Streaks Look to Even Score with United Township
Galesburg didn't play its best ball earlier this season at United Township and it cost the Streaks a loss. Galesburg is shooting for redemption against the Panthers on its own court.

GHS (17-9, 2-5 WB6) is 11-3 at Thiel Gymnasium so far this season, which would seemingly give the team an edge against U-T (15-6, 4-3 WB6) in Friday night's Western Big Six Conference matchup between the two teams. However, the Panthers are probably pretty comfortable playing on the hardwood at GHS after suiting up for four games in the Galesburg MLK Classic last month and winning three of them.

Galesburg lost at East Moline 73-67 on December 18th after surrendering a first-half lead. That was the seventh straight win for the Panthers to open the season. After winning one more game to start 8-0, U-T lost three of its next four. The Panthers have won two straight games going into tonight's game against the Silver Streaks - against Dixon (64-31) and Alleman (49-41) - and three of their last four. Galesburg is 2-2 after the Quincy snapped the Streaks' stretch of eight straight wins. The other loss was against Rock Island (56-42) last Friday night at Thiel Gym. The wins are were against Geneseo and Blue Island Eisenhower.

Alleman gave U-T a scare last Friday night. The Pioneers controlled the temp through three quarters and led the Panthers 24-23 going into the final quarter. U-T then exploded for 26 points and went on to win the game. The Panthers didn't help themselves at the free-throw line, making just 13-of-26. Alleman was worse at 11-of-23. Senior guard Shaq Lowery knocked down four three-point baskets and scored 19 points to lead United Township against Alleman. He was the only East Moline player to reach double figures.

Galesburg shot poorly in losing last Friday against Rock Island. The Silver Streaks responded in a short turnaround against Eisenhower, leaving for the United Center before 7:00 the following morning and getting off to a good start in the game GHS won 52-42. The Streaks had good balance in the game with Victor Davis leading the way with 14 points and nine rebounds. Brandon Thompson scored 13 and grabbed eight boards and Chad Thompson scored 10 and had seven rebounds.

Galesburg needs to win its final three Big Six games to finish with a better record than the 4-6 mark last season's squad had in league play. Three wins would also secure a 20-win season for the Silver Streaks. Galesburg still has a non-conference game left with Peoria Notre Dame at Thiel Gym. U-T's remaining league games are at home against Moline and Quincy.

Galesburg and United Township split their meetings last season with the Streaks winning at the Panther Den after U-T won at Thiel Gym. The win by the Silver Streaks snapped a four-game U-T winning streak against Galesburg. The Streaks lead the all-time series 88-62.

Pregame coverage of Friday's UT/GHS game begins at 7:06 on WGIL and online at www.wgil.com.
