City Receives Award for Golf Program
The city of Galesburg recreation division has received the New Program of the Year award by the Kids Golf Foundation of Illinois. In addition, Guy Vitale, owner of G & M Distributors was honored as one of its Volunteer of the Year recipients.

The city of Galesburg provided a week-long Tee Level Clinic for 30 youth last summer as part of the Hook A Kid on Golf program, administered by the National Alliance for Youth Sports. This was the first year for providing the program which was well received by the participants and their families. The free program took place at Bunker Links Golf Course in June, 2009. Hook A Kid on Golf is aimed at boys and girls who normally would not have the opportunity to learn about golf. The program encourages golf as a life-long sport, while teaching valuable life lessons that can benefit youth in future years. Boys and girls, aged 8-14 years old, were able to participate free of charge through a grant from the Kids Golf Foundation of Illinois and the Hook A Kid on Golf USGA Foundation and with sponsorship from G & M Distributors.

"I was surprised and honored the city of Galesburg was chosen as a recipient for this award," Elizabeth Varner, Recreation Supervisor said. "It was an additional pleasure to hear Guy Vitale received the Volunteer of the Year award. He was totally involved with the Tee Level Clinic every step of the way, making him well deserving of this award."

"The Kids Golf Foundation of Illinois and Greg Merrill, Bunker Links Golf Professional were instrumental in the success of the program," Varner said. "The Kids Golf Foundation of Illinois has a well organized program that makes it easy to give youth a quality learning experience. Greg led the golf instruction each day and involved other local golf professionals from Soangetaha and Lake Bracken to assist as well. We thought it was a great experience and hope to receive funding for 2010."
