| Girl Wrestler Eliminated After 2 Tourny Losses |
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- An Iowa high school wrestler who became the first girl to win a state tournament match when her opponent refused to compete against her has been eliminated from the tournament. Cedar Falls freshman Cassy Herkelman lost her quarterfinals match 5-1 Friday morning and was pinned in a consolation match later in the day.
Herkelman and Ottumwa High School sophomore became the first girls to qualify for the tournament in its 85-year history. Herkelman's favored first-round opponent defaulted rather than face her because he says wrestling a girl would conflict with his religious beliefs. (Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press.
