Freeport Aquin Wins 1st Girls Basketball Title
NORMAL, Ill. (AP) -- Sophie Brunner scored 34 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, outplaying her all-state counterpart, Micah Jones, and leading Freeport Aquin to its first girls basketball state title with a 61-51 win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in the Class 1A championship.

Brunner had 12 of the final 15 points for the Bulldogs (32-4). Jones finished with 16 points and 15 rebounds for the Hornets (29-4). Both are juniors.

Brunner tied the game at 48 with a bank from the middle of the lane with 4 minutes, 15 seconds remaining and hit two layups seconds apart to put the Bulldogs up 52-49.

Aubrey Chang added 11 points, and Ellen Brunner chipped in nine points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Bailey Doty led the Hornets with 16 points and Courtney Myers added 12.
