Boys basketball

Large-school boys basketball teams in Illinois will begin postseason play Monday, as regional tournaments open around the state. Here in Galesburg, the play-in game of the 5-team event finds Rock Island Alleman up against Geneseo. The winner will advance to play top-seeded Quincy Notre Dame Tuesday night at 6, followed the Galesburg Silver Streaks game with Canton at 7:30. Winners will advance to Friday night's championship.

In East Moline, the class 4A regional opener finds a pair of Western Big-6 teams will lock up Monday, as the host Panthers will battle the Moline Maroons. The two teams just played on Friday night, with Moline winning handily. The winner of Monday's contest plays Rock Island tomorrow.

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans will also play Tuesday night, as they open play at the class 2A Farmington Sectional against Tremont. Monmouth-Roseville advanced with Saturday afternoon's win over Knoxville in the regional championship.

[Girls basketball

In girls play, Lincoln Trail Conference champion Annawan took third over the weekend at the class 1A state finals at Redbird Arena. The Lady Braves lost their semifinal game by just one point to Freeport Aquin, which went on to win their second straight state title.

Monday, the class 3A and 4A supersectionals will be played. At Pontiac, the Morton Potters have a showdown with Kankakee Bishop McNamara in class 3A, while in Bloomington, the Peoria Richwoods Knights will be the underdog against 30-1 Chicago Heights Marian in class 4A play. Last week, Richwoods defeated top-ranked Edwardsville.


Galesburg's George Carter, Jr. posted another win over the weekend. Carter knocked out Shawn Wilson of Nebraska in the second round in the feature match at the Danceland Ballroom in Davenport. Carter is now 9-0 in his pro career, and earned the North American Middleweight title with the victory.
