Regional tournament play begins Monday night for Class 1A and 2A girls basketball teams. Abingdon is a host site for the 1A Regional, where Bushnell-Prairie City/Avon meets West Prairie in a play-in game at 7:30pm. The winner meets top-seeded Lewistown Tuesday night at 6. Another 1A Regional begins in Annawan, where the ROWVA Tigers play Ridgewood at 6, followed by Galva and Stark County at 8. In Class 2A, Monmouth-Roseville goes up against West Central Monday at Rockridge, while North Fulton plays the host team in Kewanee.
The Galesburg girls are off until Thursday, when they finish the regular season at Rock Island Alleman.
The Galesburg Freshmen boys will be in action Monday, as they host Moline at 6 o'clock.
The Silver Streaks varsity boys will practice this week as they prepare for a trip to Rock Island on Friday night. Galesburg is coming off of a pair of big wins over the weekend, beating Quincy and Blue Island Eisenhower. Coach Mike Reynolds said after Saturday night's 79-63 win over Eisenhower that his team did a lot of things well, especially on defense.
"I thought we did a great job," Reynolds said. "I thought that we defended extremely well, did exactly what we needed to do, and to hold them to 63 points -- they had 91 [Friday] night -- I thought that was a heck of a defensive effort two nights in a row, which is hopefully a good sign for the Streaks."
The GHS boys are now 15-12 for the season, and 5-2 in Western Big 6 play.
