North Carolina Can End Rocky Season with NIT Title
NEW YORK (AP) -- North Carolina has a chance to win another championship. Just not the one it wanted.

Left out of the NCAA tournament after a disappointing season, the Tar Heels have reeled off four straight victories in the NIT and will play Dayton in the title game Thursday night at Madison Square Garden.

A win would make North Carolina the first team to follow an NCAA national championship with an NIT crown the next year.

Coach Roy Williams said Wednesday that the biggest reason for his team's recent turnaround is increased intensity on defense. And though he acknowledged this was not the tournament the Tar Heels wanted to play in, he said winning the title would be a wonderful feeling.

North Carolina's only NIT title came in 1971.
