| Cubs to Erect Billy Williams Statue |
MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- Billy Williams, a Hall of Famer and one of the best hitters in Chicago Cubs history, will be honored by the team with a statue of his likeness at Wrigley Field.
The team said Wednesday the statue will be unveiled September 7 before that night's game. A spokesman said it could be placed in a temporary location until the area around the ballpark is done being refurbished.
Ernie Banks is the only other ballplayer to be so honored by the Cubs. There also is a statue of broadcaster Harry Caray outside of Wrigley.
Williams batted .290 during his 18-year career and hit 392 of his 426 homers as a member of the Cubs.
