| Zambrano Not Sharp, Weaver is in Cubs Split Loss to Angels |
MESA, Ariz. (AP) _ Jered Weaver pitched five innings of one-hit ball in his last and best outing of the spring, leading the Los Angeles Angels to an 11-0 victory over a Chicago Cubs split squad Wednesday. Weaver, who entered the game with an 8.03 ERA and had been hit hard last week in a Triple-A contest, struck out nine of the 16 batters he faced and allowed only Xavier Nady's second-inning single. He easily outdueled another expected opening-day starter, Carlos Zambrano, who gave up four runs on six hits and two walks in four innings. Mike Napoli hit a two-run homer in the first inning, his sixth shot this spring. Two Angels outfield prospects had big days: Terry Evans went 5 for 5 with a homer and Peter Bourjos homered and tripled. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
