|POSTED 2:13 p-m 3/10/10 A Monmouth-Roseville student-athlete is joining an elite fraternity of college-bound athletes from around the country.
Drew Cole, a sophomore at M-R, was recently selected to represent the USA and Monmouth as a member of Coast to Coast Baseball in Puerto Rico this summer.
During the seven-day program, Cole will pitch for a team in the 16-18 year old division comprised of 12 players from across the country. He will compete against top amateur teams from greater San Juan while receiving instruction from Coast to Coast staff who have all played or coached baseball at the collegiate or professional levels.
Each summer and fall Coast to Coast sees approximately 2,000 players at a series of nationwide tryouts. Additionally, the organization evaluates hundreds of applications from players unable to attend a tryout event. From this pool, roster spots are filled with players seeking to play at one of the game's highest levels.
Based in Marietta (OH), the 8-year old program has taken over 1,600 players from 46 different states to compete in Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Australia and Puerto Rico. The organization's alumni now compete at every level of college baseball and even professionally.
Cole showcased his pitching skills for the Coast to Coast coaches at a recent tryout held at Bradley University. At tryouts, players are evaluated in four areas: hitting, fielding, arm strength and speed. Players selected from the tryouts then have a chance to choose the Puerto Rico program or the Florida Camp & Showcase event held twice annually in Jupiter (FL) at the Roger Dean MLB Spring-training complex.
"It is quite an honor for both Drew and Monmouth-Roseville High School for him to have been chosen. He has excelled at M-R already in the athletic arena and in the classroom. We are very pleased that Drew has been offered this opportunity," said Monmouth-Roseville High School Athletic Director and Varsity Baseball Coach Chuck Grant.
In addition to his love for baseball, Cole is a member of WYSE and the Spanish Club at Monmouth-Roseville High School, has volunteered for Special Olympics, umpires youth softball and little league baseball games in the summer, plays for the Monmouth-Roseville Titans football, basketball and baseball teams and has achieved academic excellence status. Cole hopes to play baseball at the college level and major in either architecture, sports management or athletic training.
In order to maintain his amateur status, Cole will be seeking to raise his share of the team's cost.
